Innovation Day demoes – Intelligent Traffic Systems for ALL road users

Recently, we held a special Innovation Day for the media in Amsterdam to highlight some of the fantastic things that our R&D guys are doing in areas such as the Internet of Things, NFC, and the connected car.

Elsewhere on the blog and at the automotive section of the NXP site you’ll find plenty of insight about our vision on the car of the future, where vehicles talk to each other and the traffic infrastructure around them to shorten journey times, reduce CO2 emissions and avoid accidents.

One of the demoes we showed to the media at the Innovation Day was based on our Automotive Telematics On-board Platform (ATOP) solution – but instead of using the ATOP chip in a car, this demo showed how the solution could also be applied to bicycles.

This year, cyclists at the cancer fundraising event Alpe d’HuZes were equipped with technology from NXP and NSPYRE. Using the ATOP chip, live data such as cycling speed, slope and the heart rate of each cyclist was streamed to the internet. This allowed friends and family back home to view the exact position and physical condition of participants as they climbed the Alps by bicycle – six times in one day!

The demo shows how information from the cyclists is transferred securely over a GPRS link and is visualized on a website. It also shows how vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, can be automatically alerted to the approach of fast-moving emergency vehicles, demonstrating how future-facing telematics solutions enable road users and their vehicles to communicate with each other as part of an Intelligent Traffic System.

Check out the video of the demo here:

Let us know how you’d like to see road users to connect and ‘talk’ to each other in the future – what data would you like to share?

At NXP Semiconductors my specialization is communications for Research & Development. In that role I help the R&D management with developing communication strategies and key messaging. I also execute all kinds of communication activities, to all our target audiences: Press, customers, partners, government representatives and many other external parties. But also our own employees form an important target group. Media used are presentations/demos, internet & intranet, social media, newsletters, gatherings and events, brochures, direct mailings, video, surveys etcetera. My technical background as an engineer and technical manager allows me to easily relate to the content, as well as to the engineering world and its people. Expanding my scope from engineering to communications, about ten years ago, allowed me to develop competencies in creativity, in tailored message development, in copy-writing and event management, as well as in high level networking. Working directly for NXP’s Chief Technology Officer and his management team, I operate at the heart of the R&D organization, close to strategy development and decision making. As one of Europe's top chip manufacturers, NXP is an extremely dynamic company. Business challenges can change overnight: never a dull moment!

Technology changes our life greatly. And I think it is a better way to visit and work for a period in our diffferent companies to share our ideas and different way of thinking…
