Need To Design an AC Drive with High Precision and Efficiency? Here’s How.

It is essential for AC drives to support various loads across various industrial applications including oil and gas, chemical, mining, marine, and food and beverage to name a few. These applications require precision motor control that ensures high productivity and efficiency. Additional benefits include a reduction in mechanical stress on the motor, which reduces maintenance costs.

To achieve high precision motor control, it is important to incorporate a chipset that provides high performance processing with real-time, low latency response and low power consumption. High-speed GPIOs and high memory density enables seamless connectivity and processing that is necessary when interfacing with HMI systems, motors, power and communication modules, and AFEs.

AC Drive Solution

NXP provides a solution that includes power, control, and HMI stages. The power stage rectifier circuit is efficiently managed by the i.MX RT1060 crossover processor and GD3100 single channel gate driver. Motor feedback is sensed by the KMA221 programmable angle sensor that in turn is decoded by the MPU. The control stage that includes the i.MX RT1060 provides high speed connectivity via GPIOs programmed as AC drive analog and digital inputs and outputs including USB Type C, Ethernet, and TSN connectivity.

The LPC546xx MCU serves as a detachable HMI panel for real time control and monitoring and together with the control and power stages, this design provides a low latency and low power HMI interface. This enables precision motor control and results in high efficiency and productivity.
