NXP’s latest quad-core applications processor for secure, affordable and intelligent edge computing has landed. Built on the success of the popular i.MX 8M Mini applications processor, it provides a pin-compatible offering that gives you even more choices for your next product design.

Affordable quad-core processing, with bonus Arm® Cortex®-M7 core

Quad-core processing is the new normal for intelligent, embedded processing. Do you want to add cost-effective voice support to your already feature-rich platform? You’ll need quad-core processing. Are you adding intelligence to your product? You’ll likely need quad-core processing for that too. Good thing that the i.MX 8M Nano provides up to four Cortex-A53 cores running up to 1.5 GHz per core; that’s enough headroom for any embedded application. Not sure today what your product might need? Then you have pin-compatible options in a single package. You can start with a single- or dual-core Cortex-A53 today and upgrade to a quad-core when you need it. We’ve also added a bonus fast Cortex-M7 core on all devices to help you integrate more of your system functionality into a smaller footprint. The Cortex-M7 can implement low-power wake word detection, connect to sensors for low-power environmental sensing, or even run application specific libraries that require real-time operation (e.g. Class B libraries for appliances). Hardware IP allows both cores to securely communicate and allocate peripherals to either core type for optimal system partitioning and performance.

Feature-packed, system optimized

The i.MX 8M Nano comes with an integrated 3D GPU that supports the latest OpenGL® ES 3.1 and Vulkan® application programming interfaces (APIs). As you look toward building more advanced user interfaces with rich graphics, you’ll need the performance and power efficiency of hardware accelerated graphics. The device is also packed with advanced multi-channel audio capabilities including hardware asynchronous sample rate conversion which means you don’t need to load the Arm cores as you support audio applications. We’ve also provided a wide array of high-speed interfaces such as USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and SDIO for adding Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth connectivity to your product. NXP provides proven reference designs that enable multiple memory types, Wi-Fi/BT enabled out-of-the-box, and Linux and Android board support packages to get you started fast.
